May 27 : Remembering Tristan

It's so sad to know that Tristan is gone, and so amazing to see how many people he touched.

Thankful and thoughtful, today and always.

May 25 : Woody's Birthday!

I drew this image the other day but it has been fitting for the past handful of rainy days. I was waiting for the train and realized I was dressed in so many bright colors while the people around me had billions of black/grey/beige outfits and umbrellas. Of course I then started giggling which made me stick out even more.

In other news, it was Woody's birthday (my other TOTALLY AWESOME AND AMAZING brother) on the 22nd! YAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY WOODY!!!!!! I made him this comic in mini comic book form on the actual day, but it's taken me awhile to color it in photoshop. I don't usually do coloring there and wanted to experiment.  All I will say is that I WISH Woody and I could wear the clothing that  is in the following comic. I WISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May 14 : Chocolate Mice

Chocolate Mice. I have a lot to say about these delicious little dudes. The funny thing is that I don't even like to eat them as much as I like to share them with people, look at them and make them.  I was getting so many comments and questions about them that I figured I'd devote a blog entry to the matter. Let's hope this clears things up.

Mice on the drying rack

It's a relatively simple recipe to make them but many steps that add up, especially because you have to wait in between each step before going on to the next one. I've made them in one day before from start to finish - but I was EXHAUSTED by the end so I've pretty much sworn off doing that ever again. I got the recipe from Mirabelle's Cafe in Burlington, VT where I used to work as a coffee barista. Not a bad bunch of information to pick up from work! I like thinking about this because many recipes that are classics in my family growing up were recipes that my parents got from their old days working in restaurants (example, my favorite sesame ginger salad dressing). I'm gonna rock these mice with my future kids one day - SCORE FOR MALINA (and, I guess SCORE for my future kids!!!!)

I. Love. This. Photo. LOOK AT THOSE MICE NOSES!!!!!

What are these chocolate mice anyway?!? Basically, you make little sugar/butter cookie bases and chocolate ganache (equal parts heavy cream and bakers chocolate) which gets piped onto the cookies. Then you place the almonds (for ears), then dip everything in melted chocolate and decorate with white chocolate. TA DA! (((this was a very simplified explanation, but now you get the idea of what they are)))

Before dipping in milk chocolate

I like making little extra chocolate "Dots" - they are a great bite and don't have as much intense chocolate that goes into making them, as well as being beautiful but not as time consuming to decorate.

A tasty dot

Army of Mice in the fridge (this wasn't even all of them!)

And that is my baking lesson/picture show/bragging session/deliciousness. BAM!

May 12 : Happy Birthday Mama!

Fox Story INTERRUPTION in honor of my mama's BIRTHDAY! That's right folks! Not only is today Mother's Day, but it's ALSO my mother's actual DAY!!!!!!!!! I thought I'd share the present I made her - a big collage of photos and love (awwwww!) A happy Mother's Day to all of you lovely mamas out there and a Happy Father's Day to my popster! - if you know my family well, it won't be surprising that in my family we have always celebrated Mother's Day on Father's Day, and Father's Day on Mother's Day. This is due to the fact that my mom's birthday always tends to fall right near Mother's Day (perfect example: today!) and my papa's birthday is always similarly close to Father's Day. My mom had us switch to this system wayyyy back - total props to her, otherwise we would have surely always combined her birthday with Mother's Day, and really, she deserves all the credit and presents and love-givin'. To cheat her out of two days of celebration would just be horrendous. My elementary school teachers never really understood why I always made a Mother's Day card on Father's Day, and a Father's Day card on Mother's Day --- this also meant that the pre-made cards or gifts my teachers would set up, always went to the opposite parent: my dad was always getting the flower pots we made for Mother's Day and my mom was always getting the decorated tool box for Father's Day.

Blahblahblah - that's my story.

Happy Birthday Mama!!!!! You rock everyone's socks off every single frickin day!

May 7 : Fox Story #15 part one

Busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy.

My biggest news as of late is that I have one of these smart phone things that has been chillin' on my desk for over a week now, waiting for me to sit down and start using it - tooooooo busy. Well, I probably could squeeze around some time but the truth is that I'm nervous. It's sort of silly I guess, that I've been putting off the big plunge for so long - even after the new phone is literally IN MY POSSESSION.  It makes me nervous to start using an iphone and know that I'll become so accustomed to having it that the idea of my current phone will be funny. It's like when I was the only one I knew that didn't text cause it cost me $.25 a text and then my parents upgraded to a texting plan (OMG!) and I never before knew how easy it was to send and receive such quick info from the peeps in my life.

Blahblahblah - one of these days I'm going to start using the new device and the next thing you know, I'll be posting pictures of every meal I eat, the outfits I'm wearing, and the view from the subway as I pass over the bridge.

But, for now, enjoy a good ol' Fox Story and text me pictures I wont be able to see until I upgrade.
